Cold Cave - Life Magazine

I’m sure most people have felt that specific sense of indignation that occurs when one of their friends suggests that he or she should listen to a song because “it totally fits [insert name here]!” In this case, I tried really hard to let my pride help me avoid listening to this song; luckily for me, my pride took a day off. This song by Cold Cave, who Wikipedia and Last.fm classify as synthpop, is certainly a great song to take in while eating blood oranges and reading books on sovereignty, although the lyrics are kind of puzzling. For some reason, I associate Life Magazine with Mad Men, The Wright Stuff and Good Night and Good Luck, all of which contain some elements of the McCarthyism and inane propaganda of the 1950s and early 1960s. Yet this song seems to be a bit too sad to fit in with that theme:

I dig myself to the center of the Earth

then there was a hole

I crawl back and put a knock upon your door

but there was no one home

Maybe I need to be an English major to get the irony hidden in these words, but right now Math, Physics and Common Sense aren’t helping me out very much.

Regardless, enjoy this song (pre- or post-diatribe)
