I heard this in the trailer for Noah Baumbach’s upcoming movie Greenberg. That shit looks depressing.

So, you might be asking, what is that black box? It is A Tool to Deceive and Slaughter, by artist Caleb Larsen. Inside it is a computer that auctions the box itself off on eBay every week. No one can actually own it, but if they bid high enough, they get the privilege of holding on to thing until it sells itself again. With art being so over-commercialized these days (there is even a fine art hedge fund), it kinda seems that art is just another commodity like corn or oil, just meant to be bought, sold, and hoarded by the rich. The genius of this is that no matter how much you pay, you can never own ATtDaS, and you have no control over what price it sells for. So it is really impossible to sell it (it sells itself), buy it (you can only hold it), or hoard it (you can’t sell it to yourself).

It has completely transcended commercialization, and ironically enough it did so by being totally over-commercialized.
